Knowledge Convergence in Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning: The Role of External Representation Tools
نویسندگان
چکیده
This study investigates how two types of graphical representation tools influence the way in which learners use knowledge resources in two different collaboration conditions. In addition, the study explores the extent to which learners share knowledge with respect to individual outcomes under these different conditions. The study also analyzes the relationship between the use of knowledge resources and different types of knowledge. The type of external representation (content-specific vs. content-independent) and the collaboration condition (videoconferencing vs. face-to-face) were varied. Sixty-four (64) university students participated in the study. Results showed that learning partners converged strongly with respect to their use of resources during the collaboration process. Convergence with respect to outcomes was rather low, but relatively higher for applicationoriented knowledge than for factual knowledge. With content-specific external representation, learners used more appropriate knowledge resources without sharing more knowledge after collaboration. Learners in the computer-mediated collaboration used a wider range of resources. Moreover, in exploratory qualitative and quantitative analyses, the study found evidence for a relation between aspects of the collaborative process and knowledge convergence.

متن کاملCo-constructing Artefacts and Knowledge in Net- Based Teams: Implications for the Design of Collaborative Learning Environments
Computer-based learning environments for science and mathematics education support predominantly individual learning; from first generation drill and practice programs to today’s advanced, knowledge-based tutorial systems, one learner interacting with one computer has been the typical setting. Mathematics educators, however, increasingly appreciate the value of collaborative learning and includ...

Collaborative learning tools play important roles in communications and knowledge building, among learners in a virtual learning environment. They demand appropriate grouping algorithms as well as facilitating learners’ participations mechanisms. This paper has utilized some information retrieval techniquesto investigate the relevance of discussion posts to their containing forums, and extract ...
متن کاملAnalyzing sequential data in computer-supported collaborative learning
Representations and changes between them play a major role in cognitive development (e.g., Vosniadou, & Brewer, 1992) and education (e.g., Hewson, Beeth, & Thorley, 1998). By definition, change of representations is also indispensable for collaborative work since a common understanding or shared knowledge can only be achieved by a partial convergence of the knowledge structures of the collabora...
